The downsides: 1) It may be quite a while until enrollment actually begins at a side nearby (meanwhile vision may continue to deteriorate); 2) You will have to travel to/from the site; 3) There will be a lot of paperwork and hassle; 4) The patient may be assigned to the placebo arm; and 5) Even if assigned to the Evizon arm, the drug might not work.

The upsides are that the drug might just work well and you are helping to advance the practice of medicine.

Were it me or someone in my family, I’d probably conclude that the downsides outweighed the upsides, but it would not be an easy decision.
