A Birch tree and a Beech tree were growing next to each other on top of a hill. One day, a tiny sapling started to grow in between them.
"Is it a Son of a Beech?" asked the Birch tree.
"It couldn't possibly be! Perhaps it's a Son of a Birch?" replied the Beech tree.
As they argued over what kind of tree it might be, a woodpecker landed nearby.
"What's all the noise about?" the woodpecker asked.
"We're not sure if this little tree between us is a Son of a Beech or a Son of a Birch. Can you tell?"
So, the woodpecker took a quick taste of the Beech tree, then a quick taste of the Birch tree. Finally, he took a quick taste of the tiny sapling.
"Well, I have an answer for you," said the woodpecker. "It is neither a Son of a Beech, nor a Son of a Birch....however, it is the best piece of Ash I've ever stuck my pecker in."
