Revamped Scrushy Jury Returns to Work; No Verdict Reached on 19th Day of Deliberations
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Jurors deliberating for a 19th day in the fraud trial of Richard Scrushy failed to reach a verdict Friday on charges the fired HealthSouth Corp. chief executive led a $2.7 billion earnings overstatement.
Court officials said the jury would return to resume deliberations at noon Monday, later than normal because a member had a doctor's appointment.
The judge told the jury to start deliberations from scratch this week after replacing an ill member with an alternate.
Scrushy is the first CEO accused under the Sarbanes-Oxley corporate reporting law. He also is charged of conspiracy, false reporting, fraud and money laundering.
Scrushy, 52, could be sentenced to the equivalent of life imprisonment and fined millions of dollars if convicted. Prosecutors also are seeking $278 million in assets they claim Scrushy made off the accounting scheme.
