Comments on Intel server roadmap...
I think Intel has been very upfront with their server roadmap. It does sound like there is some speculation on some "surprise" projects that might show up. However, to be clear the roadmap of record is:
Dual socket... Irwindale -> Dempsey (dual core cedarmill) -> woodcrest (dual core or maybe quad core conroe)
Quad socket and above ... Potomac (large cache Prescott) -> Tulsa (large cache dual core prescott) -> whitefield (quad core Conroe)
Cranford -> Paxville (dual core prescott) -> whitefield
I don't think Intel has explicitly stated that Tulsa and Paxville are 90nm, but I would be very surprised if they came out on 65nm.
With regards to "surprise" products I have heard:
Sossaman... which is an SMP capable Yonah for dual socket dual core blades... would be 32b only
Mystery product without a name... dual yonah... which would be a quad core 32b only product. I really doubt Intel will make this product even though the die size and power would be very reasonable.
Almost certainly whitefield will be a 65nm quad core Conroe based product. If Intel shoots for a 45nm Nehalem based product it will be well into 2008 before it ships. It has typically been about a year from the introduction of a new core to moving that core into the Xeon MP space. The current timing for whitefield is very consistent with this, and being a conroe follow-on.
Any thoughts or corrections welcome.
