The shaft is near 39º31'23.30"N/120º49'43.77"W at about 5100' ASL, which is about 1000' higher than the mine portal. There's a topo map on the NBRI Ruby page that I used with Google Earth to find these coordinates. That article alluded to the govt shutting down the mine just as they were getting to a good spot. That good spot must be the area where the shaft is. It is positioned near the bottom of a ravine (and at the end of the lateral tunnel EDIT: of the Black Channel System) where Rock Creek now flows and has probably flowed for millenia.
