Criminal gangs and tribal militias continue to battle police and troops in the area. The locals are demanding a larger share of the oil wealth, and increasingly are using force to get it.

June 17, 2005: The United States and Britain closed their embassies and consulates to the public in response to intelligence information about Islamic terrorists operating in the area. Al Qaeda supports Islamic militants in northern Nigeria, who are trying to establish Islamic rule for the region.

June 15, 2005: In the Delta oil region, two German and four Nigerian oil workers were kidnapped by a local gang. The four hostages were taken from a boat, transporting them to an oil facility.

June 11, 2005: In the Delta oil region, a conflict between two former generals over which of them would become the new head of the Okpe tribe, led to the death of two policemen, who were trying to restore order.

June 8, 2005: In the Delta oil region, battles between rival oil stealing gangs and the police have left several gangsters, a policeman and a soldier dead.

June 4, 2005: The oil companies in the Delta region are building new off shore facilities, that will increase production from 2.5 million barrels a day, to 4.1 million. The offshore gas and oil wells will be less subject to thieves tapping into pipelines and stealing. The offshore facilities will also be less
