Boeing, Lockheed fight for Indian order By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Published June 17, 2005
PARIS -- Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. are battling to win a multibillion order from India's air force for 126 fighter jets.
Boeing hopes to sell India its F/A-18 fighter equipped with one of the most advanced radars in the world. Lockheed hopes to sell India its F-16 fighter.
Both of the U.S. companies have said they would accept co-production with Indian companies of the aircraft as part of any deal, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
Exactly which features on each aircraft the administration will allow India to buy from either Boeing or Lockheed is not yet clear.
Aircraft makers in Russia, France and Sweden hope the U.S. restricts the features Boeing and Lockheed can offer India because such a development could increase their ability to muscle in on the subcontinent's jet fighter trade.
