You might keep in mind that in Denver and other "..places of altitude.." it takes 1000cc's to equal what you get from a 750+ in San Diego; especially when riding 2-up.
Some of the Honda and clone "4's" in the 400+ range are really good commuters for rider-only situations. Good tire width helps a lot regarding stability.
