The Scientific Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) research on "global warming and glacier morphology" confirms that Turkey is becoming a dessert.

A report on Gaziantep University Education Faculty Assistant Professor Okkes Kesici's "Suphan in the context of Global Warming and Glacier Morphology, Researches in the Mountains Cilo Project" has recently been presented to TUBITAK.

Kesici said they have attempted to reveal Turkey's condition in terms of climate change in the scope of this project that was launched in 2000. He emphasized that glaciers reflect the changes in global warming obviously and sensitively; they have gathered further information dating back to 100-150 years. Announcing that the data and the results attained in the studies have been both "impressive and dreadful," Kesici said, "We have examined all aerial photos in detail. We have observed the changes in the glaciers from the maps spanning three eras. We have searched over a period of 107 years and came up with four different maps. In conclusion, we have realized that 97 percent of glaciers have already melted. There are small glaciers in some parts of the Agri, Cilo, Suphan and Kasgar mountains, and the glaciers in Erciyes and Aladaglar have completely disappeared." The Professor said because of the thawing glaciers, climate and agriculture will completely change and many elements of industry to microscopic live forms will be affected. A slip has occurred in the climate belts due to global warming, Kesici drew attention to the fact that Turkey is heading towards landscapes resembling the Sahara, Saudi Arabia, the Great Indian Desert, and Patagonia climates. Turkey has begun to enter the "desert belt", Kesici said, "However, it will have a warmer climate because of the effects of higher latitudes; however, everything will change. While glaciers thaw, the sea level rises. The present generation is under a real threat. Although development and change seem to take much more time, the change is much faster when compared with our internal dynamics."
