Fish are there, weather not cooperating...maybe next week?

Salt Water Fishing for June 13

Overview

Windy, windy weather kept most boats fishing for salmon off the water this past week. That and big tides with strong currents also brought the halibut fishing to a standstill. Catches of spring (Chinook) salmon up to 38 lbs and halibut to 35 lbs were slower than the previous week. If you have any fishing info, notable catches or tips that you would like to share or have included in our fishing report, please email us at info@fishingvictoria.com.

Sooke

Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week, at least when you could get out. A 38 lb spring, caught on anchovy, was the biggest salmon of the week. Several other salmon over 30 lbs were caught and quite a few springs in the twenties were taken. Otter Point, the Sooke Bluffs, Secretary (Donaldson) Island and Possession Point were all good spots, but you had to move around, depending on the tides, to find which spot was the “hot spot”. The salmon are being caught shallower at 50 to 80 feet on the downrigger. Anchovy was the most successful bait and the most successful teaser heads were the Glow Green patterns or the Purple Haze. Rhys Davis has just come out with a Purple Haze Super Herring Special Teaser which should be a killer with large Anchovy or 6 to 9 inch Herring. Spoons are working too and the best ones are the Coyotes, Titans, Devil Tail or Gibbs Gators in Glow /Green or Green Silver. HALIBUT – No halibut were brought in this past week, due to weather and tides, but mostly weather. Extra Large Herring or mackerel, fished off a spreader bar, was the most productive bait out west.

Becher Bay

Salmon fishing was PICKING UP this past week, when it wasn’t too windy that is. Qui9te a few salmon in the 20’s were brought in at the marina. Most of the springs were of the short and stubby variety. Anglers were catching the fish from Beechey Head west to the O’Brien Point. Most of the salmon were taken at 50 to 70 feet on the downrigger. The best bait has been anchovies fished in a Glow/Green or Purple Haze Rhys Davis teaser head behind a Green/Silver or a Green/Glow flasher. Green is definitely the color to be using here now. Good spoons for salmon this past week were Coyote and Titans spoons in Green/silver or Green/Glow. We’ve heard that seals are still a problem near Beechey Head and the whales moved through both days on the weekend slowing down the action.

Pedder Bay

The salmon fishing was GOOD this past week when it wasn’t too windy to fish. Inside Pedder Bay, springs up to 30 lbs were caught trolling near the Kelp Bed. Also inside the bay, jigging with Buzz Bombs and other jigs produced salmon of 23, 15 and 11 lbs. Whirl Bay and Church Rock also produced springs up to 25 lbs for anglers trolling anchovies or herring. The fish were shallower than before and the best depths were 60 to 85 feet on the downrigger. The Green/Glow and Purple Haze Anchovy Specials or Super Herring Specials were the best teaser heads to use in combination with 5½” to 6” anchovies (8 or 10 pack) or 6” to 7” Herring. Troll from 60 to 110 feet on the downrigger. If you want to troll spoons, use Green/Glow or Cop Car Coyotes, Gypsies or Titans. HALIBUT – Halibut fishing was SLOW this past weekend. This coming week should be good if it’s not too windy. Extra Large Herring or Mackerel fished off of a spreader bar with a 2 lb weight has been the most successful combination to catch the big flatfish recently.
