Dont get me wrong. Chirac wanted EU constitution to pass as all the other thugs of EU. However he like all the other thugs know damn good and well that EU had a very poor chance of making through the first real test - the constitution- and that if it did there was a good chance for a civil war ( economic or military )of some kind within the new "Union". Chirac like all thugs will gladly bar b que your children for lunch if some else has stoked the coals. Then again if the oven is whats hot I am sure he would be glad to bake them.
Mitterand Chirac and the other French camp of EU thugs most likely have back up plans. Take a look at a map of Romania. It connects Ukraine to Serbia where Moscow has popular support. Hmmm.... The connections between Paris and Bucharest are historically strong. At one time Bucharest was called little Paris. The language barrier is not that great. Romania is Frances deal no question. Russia had Bucharest just a few short years ago and Russian is spoken amongst all the older people. Being on Moscows good side with deals in the Balkans only strengthens Frances power in Europe.
The French worked hand in hand diplomatically with Moscow during the period leading up to the Iraq war. France is playing both sides of the fence IMO. They will side with who ever will make them winners. With Anglo stupidity on the rise it may well be Moscow they side with. Moscow makes its big money off arms sales these days. As the equation shift away from widgets for sale to bullets for sale Moscow does better every day.
What I understand a lot less is how much pull the French have with Bulgaria, which is also slated for EU entry in 2007 and also connects Ukraine to Serbia AND has the Black Sea coastline all the way to Turkey. It would b a fine diplomatic prize for Moscow to gain control of this Romanian Bulgarian region via a Paris Moscow union as EU falls apart and trade deals become smaller in scope with more military implications.
