Mugabe not sick, says Zimbabwe -

The Zimbabwe government has denied reports that President Robert Mugabe had taken ill
on a trip to Cuba, describing them as lies spread by opponents.
South African broadcasters reported that Mugabe was headed
from Havana to Iran for emergency medical treatment.
Zimbabwe's ambassador to Cuba Jevan Maseko said Mugabe was
"very strong and healthy," the state Herald newspaper reported.
He said South African and western media repeatedly peddled false
reports on Zimbabwe.
"They are trying to deceive the people of Zimbabwe and
cause despondency," he said.
Mugabe, 79, who travelled to Cuba Sunday for a UN environment
convention was expected to return to Harare today.
The government also described as mischievous other media reports
that Vice President Simon Muzenda, 81, was critically ill in
the main Harare hospital.
Muzenda was admitted to the critical care unit at the Parirenyatwa hospital
last month after returning from receiving medical treatment
in China.
Some reports said he was in a coma from which he was not expected
to recover.
In recent months the vice president had virtually withdrawn
from public life because of his failing health.
In a statement Mugabe's office said Muzenda was making
a "remarkable recovery."

August 26 (Reuters) — Russia’s central bank will offer gold-
backed loans for up to 90 days at an interest rate of 7 percent,
it said in a statement on Friday, expanding its lending
facilities for dealing with any future liquidity crunch
in the banking system.

The gold-backed lending was approved by the board of directors
at a meeting on Friday.
The rate on the facility is in line with the central bank’s
Lombard rate on borrowing secured against high-quality bonds.
