These gaffes follow a pattern that is being repeated with alarming frequency among America's conservative political elite and punditocracy. It goes like this: Say the most outrageously racist and/or dehumanizing thing about Obama. Pretend to be unaware of the racial implications of your statement. Tacitly (or openly) accuse your critics of injecting race into a benign debate. Rinse and repeat.
