Actually there is a decent amount of evidence that zinc lozenges (and nasal zinc from Zicam, now withdrawn) favorably impacts many colds.
I've been using these personally for more than twenty years now, and while the plural of anecdote isn't data, I (and my wife) can testify to some clear degree of efficacy. If you start early enough you can sometimes abort an incipient cold completely. Sometimes, though, the bug just keeps lurking and re-emerges when you get tired of taking the zinc after several days. (For me the biggest drawback of oral zinc lozenges is that they distort taste sensation weirdly - that's why I was sorry to see the nasal zinc disappear. The taste distortion that many encounter does make a double blind trial impossible, so maybe these new results can be criticized.
But as a business plan it has to be a dud given the wide variety of existing competing products.
