Joe, in the Device Manager of Windows, you can go to IDE/ATA controllers and pick either the primary or the secondary IDE channel. In the Advanced Settings, you can change the transfer mode from "DMA if available" to "PIO only."

I used to have to manually change this to DMA every time I built a new computer, since the default for some reason was PIO. DMA has been available for a long time, yet I guess some software drivers still default to "chicken settings."
