Fed's Poole: Slowdown Is Nearing An End

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President William Poole said on Tuesday that the mood in the U.S. economy is worse than data indicate, and that the current economic slowdown is nearing an end.

``...from the information from my own contacts and the beige book that comes out before every FOMC meeting, it just doesn't look like the U.S. economy is in the process of turning down as most people seem to feel,'' he said in comments to journalists at a conference in Prague.

``The mood in the economy is worse than the actual reported conditions...by and large demand is holding up well, production is holding up, unemployment remains low and the compiled prospects suggest that the U.S. slowdown is about at an end.''
