Conventional Backup Methods are not Good Enough
Unstructured conventional backup methodologies, such as tape, CD Rom, and external hard drives are not good enough because of :
High failure rates during restoration
Critical backup failures will not be detected until restoration is attempted
High cost of maintenance and licensing is prohibitive
Data is not encrypted
Fixed capacity per unit makes backup job less flexible
Susceptible to physical and mechanical damages
Could be easily stolen or misplaced
