This study's economics are based upon the cost of electricity (COE) from an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant referenced to a previous DOE/NETL economic study on the PWR Compact Gasifier -- Research & Development Solutions, LLC (2006). The gasifier performance was obtained from PWR's proprietary 1-D Kinetics Code -- Sprouse et al. (2007a) -- which was incorporated as a unit operation within a CHEMCAD? process simulator for obtaining mass/energy balances on the overall PWR Compact IGCC Gasification process. For biomass, additional information was obtained on the initial cost of baling, storage, drying and milling to minus 1/4-in. size from the DOE Clariton Valley Biomass Project -- Antares Group Inc. (2009). Hardware and operating costs for pulverizing the biomass to its final 200 mesh size was obtained by scaling-up the FASC KDS development mill used in obtaining the material for the ASTM laboratory scale tests as given in Section 2.2 above. Biomass costs were obtained from a number of industry publications using engineering judgment regarding whether and how far to ship this material. It was generally concluded for this study that biomass shipping would be limited to 50 miles.
