Nephros, Introduces Renal Market Application made with Eastman Tritan™ Copolyester Hemodiafiltration Filters Offer Clarity, Peace of Mind

Kingsport, Tenn., U.S.A. — June 22, 2011 — Eastman Chemical is pleased to announce that Nephros, Inc., will introduce two hemodiafiltration (HDF) filters with housing made of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester. Nephros selected Tritan for its OLpur™ MD 190 HDF and OLpur™ MD 220 HDF filters due to the material providing toughness, chemical resistance, clarity and color stability after sterilization. Tritan also is free of bisphenol A (BPA).

The OLpur™ MD 190 HDF and OLpur™ MD 220 HDF filters combine pre- and post-dilution diafiltration into two-stage filters designed specifically for mid-dilution hemodiafiltration — a proprietary fluid management system that offers optimized removal of renal toxins in the middle molecule range.

“At Nephros, we are always looking for ways to improve our products,” said Dr. Paul Mieyal, acting chief executive officer of Nephros. “Utilizing Eastman Tritan™ copolyester provides our filters with housings made of a clear, tough, BPA-free material that offers aesthetic and manufacturing advantages.”

Previously manufactured with polycarbonate (PC), the new HDF filters’ housings provide superior clarity and less yellowing after radiation sterilization compared with those made with PC. The high-flow attribute of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester allows Nephros to utilize existing PC molds for the filters. In addition, by using Tritan, Nephros eliminates the separate annealing processes required with PC due to the lower inherent residual stress of Tritan.

“Nephros and Eastman share the value of innovation, said Dr. Mieyal. “We are proud to use a high-quality material like Eastman Tritan™ copolyester for our products.”

The Nephros filters with housings made of Eastman Tritan™ copolyester are anticipated to be introduced in Europe and Canada in the fourth quarter of 2011. The products will be featured in Eastman Booth 3.00d at the European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Congress in Prague, Czech Republic, June 23 to 26.
