Please note that the GenX terminology is not something that spiderpillar came up with but terminology that Kim (the CEO of KBLB) uses as a very meaningful categorization of KBLB's products.
Note that "generation" does not apply to "generation of silkworms" but rather to generation of product.
The Gen1 is the Monster Silk product which is aimed at the commercial silk garment and accessories market. It is a step along the way to developing pure spider silk but has a large commercial value on its own since it is very superior to all silkworm silks.
The Gen2 is pure spider silk. It is hoped that this will be accomplished by the genetic modifications currently being made using SIAL/SGMO's zinc fingers. They might only come very close to, but not exactly the same as pure spider silk. However that would, for now, be quite good enough as it would still be markedly superior to anything else on the market. Even pure spider silk is only a step along further developments
Further generations of products (not sure which corresponds to which number) include:
Further modifications to pure spider silk such as addition of metal to make it much stronger than pure spider silk
Addition of things like antibiotics or other modifications for medical uses (These are the ones requiring FDA approval so will be years later reaching the market)
The "platform worm": Kim hasn't said exactly what that will be yet. I think I have a pretty good idea of what it is but am not going to discuss it until Kim chooses to. If it's what I think it is there are very good reasons for not discussing it right now. (I had 2 of my own posts discussing it pulled by the moderator after I realized that Kim did not want it discussed and realized why that probably was. There are some things that companies have very good reasons for not discussing until a certain stage is reached.) We probably won't be getting any details on that one for a fair while, but IMHO there is something very important going on there. Important enough to eventually be the biggest part of KBLB's business.
