Nothing definitive but of the dozen or so seemingly well informed Brits I have talked to passing through California all seemed to think that people voted for Blair simply because they were worried that the Tories are going to cut the welfare net more than Blair. UFB! The French I spoke with said that they thought that was true and that a similar thing was happening in France. I did not understand the details but evidently the French politicians have many of the French worried that if they do not vote yes fro the EU constitution the will lose their welfare. Their were also immigration scares if the EU constitution was not voted in. Currently people from the former Eastern bloc countries are showing up in France and Britain in large numbers working for much cheaper than the locals and the locals are losing jobs. The politicians in France are trying to convince the French that the only way to solve the problem is to vote the EU constitution in and make a EU wide minimum wage. LOL! As if that is going to keep the Poles from Eastern Poland or the gypsies from looking for working in the richer parts of Europe. The immediate effect is that the Europeans have taken their eye of the ball as far as the war on terror is concerned.

I wonder how Orwell would be describing this phase of the "war on terror".
