Almost all articles written about the recent events in Uzbekistan cover the brutality of the current government and the U.S. hypocrisy in dealing with that government.

This text from U.S. ally Turkey is interesting as it puts the blame on Bush.

The IHD warned that the recent "shocking events" in Uzbekistan were just the initial phase of turmoil which is likely to destabilize the entire region, adding that world is witnessing the consequences of U.S. policies in the region.

While our hypocritical stance toward Uzbekistan and Karimov’s viciousness cannot be denied, within the context of the Grand Game, considering all that has transpired and that which is to come, Turkey is right.

Turkish NGO Urges Govt to Support Human Rights in Uzbekistan
The Turkish Human Rights Association (IHD) in a written statement yesterday called on the government to declare its position on human rights violations facing people in Central Asia. The nongovernmental organization (NGO) also urged the government to formulate a pro-human rights policy for the region.

The IHD warned that the recent "shocking events" in Uzbekistan were just the initial phase of turmoil which is likely to destabilize the entire region, adding that world is witnessing the consequences of U.S. policies in the region. The statement said that as advocates of human rights the NGO is deeply troubled by killings and other major human rights violations.

The statement said that some 1,500 people, mostly children, were recently killed in Andijan, Uzbekistan when government troops crushed an uprising by alleged Islamic militants and members of the public protesting against dire economic conditions in the country. It stressed that these were obviously extrajudicial killings of the public and that the international community has apparently turned a blind eye to the events.

Those responsible for these killings should be brought to justice immediately to ensure that further steps can be taken peacefully, the statement urged.
