Nvidia First-Quarter Profit Triples on Sharp Increase in Sales
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Nvidia Corp., the chip designer whose best known products help power graphics on computers and handheld devices, on Thursday said quarterly profit tripled on strong growth throughout its four main product lines.
Profit during the first quarter was $64.4 million, or 36 cents per share, up from $21.3 million, or 12 cents per share. Revenue rose to $583.8 million from $471.9 million a year earlier.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 28 cents per share on revenue of $581.2 million.
"We have solidly returned our company to growth," said President and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang in a statement. "Our efforts over the past two years have put us back in growth mode and have positioned us squarely at the center of the digital media revolution."
Shares rose $1.76, or 7.7 percent, to $24.55 in electronic trading after they closed up 49 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $22.79 on the Nasdaq.
