Reynolds American Says Minnesota Class-Action Lawsuit on 'Light' Cigarettes Is Dismissed
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- Reynolds American Inc. on Thursday said a Minnesota judge dismissed a class-action lawsuit against the nation's second-largest tobacco company that claimed labeling some brands as "lights" was misleading.

The lawsuit was filed against R.J. Reynolds in a Minnesota state district court on behalf of the state's smokers. Judge Diana Eagon dismissed all of the plaintiff's claims, adding that claims against the company conflicted with the federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act.
In her dismissal, Eagon stated that, "The Labeling Act spells out what health-related language must be on packages of cigarettes, 'Lights' and regulars, and forbids a state ... from imposing further requirements."
"We obviously are pleased with the decision and believe the court's reasoning should apply to all cases with claims relating to 'Lights' cigarettes," said Martin L. Holton, senior vice president and deputy general counsel for R.J. Reynolds.
R.J. Reynolds is the second-largest tobacco company in the United States, manufacturing such top sellers as Camel, Winston, Kool, Salem and Doral. Shares rose 21 cents to $79.21 in electronic trading after the stock closed down 11 cents at $79 on the New York Stock Exchange.
