Australian PM Calls on Opposition Labor Party to Back His Government's Tax Cut Legislation
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Prime Minister John Howard on Friday urged the opposition Labor Party to support his government's legislation to slash income tax for Australians.
Labor leader Kim Beazley has vowed to try to block the multibillion dollar proposal and on Thursday night proposed doubling tax cuts for lower income workers.
Labor can only block the tax cuts until July 1, when the Howard government will gain a majority of seats in both houses of parliament, making their passage assured.
"We are hopeful that the Labor Party will see the sense of letting the tax cuts go through," Howard told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.
The Senate is scheduled to sit for two weeks in June before adjourning until Aug. 9.
