Taiwan's China Airlines Passes Review, Receives International Safety Certificate
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- China Airlines, Taiwan's largest carrier, has passed a strict review to receive an international safety certificate, the airline said Thursday, hoping to leave its past string of disasters behind.

The International Air Transport Association audited the airline on a wide range of safety procedures, and decided to send a delegation to the island to present the certificate Thursday, a CAL statement said.
Only 34 other airlines -- including Lufthansa, SAS and Singapore Airlines -- have received the certificate, CAL said.
Taiwan's largest airline has one of the worst safety records in the world, having suffered 10 fatal crashes since 1970.
An IATA spokeswoman in Taipei confirmed the award of the safety certificate to CAL but would not comment on what it has done to convince the organization of its adherence to high safety standards.
In May 2002, a Hong Kong-bound CAL flight disintegrated shortly after takeoff, plunging into the Taiwan Strait and killing all 225 people aboard.
In 1999, one of the airline's planes flipped while landing in Hong Kong during a storm and burst into flames, killing three people and seriously injuring 50.
CAL says it has established quality assurance units to monitor its flight safety and maintenance departments.
