All technologies for hip implants have reliability issues to some degree. (If there were a technology that were free of problems, manufacturers would quickly cease making the other kinds of implants and switch to that one.) However, metal-on-metal is the only kind of implant that has the problem with metallic ions and, more important, metal-on-metal has a worse track record overall than either plastic or ceramic implants.
