May 5, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 44.26 points lower to close at 10,340, the Nasdaq fell 0.43 points to close at 1,961, and the S&P 500 lost 3.02 points to close at 1,172.

The markets closed out the trading session in the red today after oil prices spiked and Standard & Poors downgraded General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) debt to junk status.

Volume was steady with 1.97 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.77 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners today by a margin of 17:15 on the NYSE and by a margin of 15:14 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, InterVideo Inc (Nasdaq: IVII) closed 24.43% higher after reporting impressive Q1 results, guiding Q2 and FY05 higher, and announcing a new partnership with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) to help bring internet and personal search capabilities to PC users with InterVideo's leading line of PC software products. On the downside, Arbinet-thexchange, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARBX) closed 25.23% lower after reporting disappointing Q1 results.

Tomorrow traders will be watching for data from Nonfarm Payrolls, Unemployment Rate, Hourly Earnings, Average Workweek, and Consumer Credit. Nonfarm Payrolls, Unemployment Rate, Hourly Earnings, and Average Workweek are expected to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M. Consumer credit is scheduled for release at 3:00 P.M.

In its 10-Q filing, steel giant Nucor says "Overall consumption of steel has remained strong in the economy and demand for Nucor products should continue to strengthen with continued improvements in the economy for the remainder of the year.... Although excess inventories were built up in the second half of 2004, we expect that steel inventories will decline to more normal levels as we move through the second quarter and that steel prices will firm and possibly begin to recover by mid-year."

The market spent most of the morning trading in a relatively tight range near new recovery highs amid slower trade. The midday selling was accompanied by heavy volume leaving the exchanges below yesterday's level but on an above average trading pace (Nasdaq 1.168 bln, NYSE 1.048 bln). TGP Teekay LNG Partners IPO prices at high end of range (24.26 +2.26)

Teekay LNG Partners opens at $24.90 after pricing its IPO at $22, at the high end of the expected $20-$22 range. The co is a provider of liquefied natural gas (or LNG) and crude oil marine transportation services. It was formed by Teekay Shipping (TK), the world's largest owner and operator of medium-sized crude oil tankers, to expand its operations in the LNG shipping sector. TK will own a 79.4% limited partner interest in TGP. The co has a fleet of seven LNG carriers and five Suezmax class crude oil tankers. Natural gas is the fastest-growing primary energy source, according to the U.S. Dept of Energy.... The stock has exposure to two hot sectors, energy and tankers and the strong pricing shows there is fairly strong interest in this deal. This IPO is being led by Citigroup.
