When I told him what he'd missed he stopped taking my calls, and refused to refund the six months left on the contract. Cornered him in the parking lot so he did what all conscientious m.d.'s should do - called the cops.

I'd love to know how common it is to miss melanoma. The only case I personally know of of clear medical misbehavior by an MD involved a dermatologist missing a melanoma. And I know that the medical papers have been far, far, far from clear in their consensus about what is dangerous and should be removed and what is ok (an understatement - when I last looked about 5 to 10 years ago it was close to each side calling in mafia hit men on the other side).

PS With regard to the physician and missing melanoma, it isn't the missing of the melanoma that offended me (given the complete lack of consensus on how to detect melanoma I can understand missing it). It was that under questioning he decided to alter the papers - and it just happened that he did it ineptly enough to get caught (he altered the papers from the exam where he missed the melanoma to reference insurance that the person didn't get until a year later)
