kozuh -- the quote had nothing to do with politics or political parties -- it was Groucho Marx, later repeated by Woody Allen, both in re country clubs ( http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1990/6/1990_6_75.shtml ), to the effect of 'I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.'
