Apr 18, 2005 (streetinsider.com via COMTEX) --The Dow finished 16.26 points lower to close at 10,071, the Nasdaq rose 4.77 points to close at 1,912 and the S&P 500 gained 3.36 points to close at 1,145.
The markets closed out the trading session mixed today despite impressive earnings and a number of merger announcements, including Adobe Systems Inc's (Nasdaq: ADBE) aquisition of Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) for $3.4 billion, as investors continued to worrry about an economic slowdown.
Volume was heavy with 2.15 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.84 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners today by a margin of 19:13 on the NYSE and were even at 15:15 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, Manchester Technologies (Nasdaq: MANC) closed 31.42% higher after private-equity firm Caxton-Iseman Capital agreed to buy the Company for $6.40 per share, or about $56 million in cash. On the downside, Neurochem Inc. (Nasdaq: NRMX) closed 28.46% lower after preliminary results from the Phase II/III clinical study for Fibrillex did not meet its primary endpoint.
Tomorrow traders will be watching for data from the PPI, Core PPI, Housing Starts, and Building Permits. All are due to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M.

VIP Vimpel Comms: Telenor announces Russian Supreme Court decision (34.42 -0.38)
In response to a request filed by Telenor (TELN) East Invest AS, the Russian Supreme Court today delivered to Telenor an order that will help restore corporate governance in VimpelCom (VIP), the Russian mobile operator in which Telenor owns 26.6% of the voting shares. The order provided to Telenor states that Russia's highest court has stayed enforcement of a lower court decision that, if upheld, would have suspended the super-majority voting provisions in VimpelCom's charter applicable to decisions of VimpelCom's board of directors on strategic issues, including acquisitions. The order also says that Supreme Court will now take jurisdiction of the case.

The majority of the 2,400 ITVMs will replace machines already in the field with the remainder being placed in new locations. GTECH expects to receive approximately $22 million in revenue from the sale of these machines.

The markets closed out the trading session mixed today despite impressive earnings and a number of merger announcements, including Adobe Systems Inc's (Nasdaq: ADBE) aquisition of Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) for $3.4 billion, as investors continued to worrry about an economic slowdown.
Volume was heavy with 2.15 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 1.84 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers outpaced decliners today by a margin of 19:13 on the NYSE and were even at 15:15 on the Nasdaq.
In individual stories, Manchester Technologies (Nasdaq: MANC) closed 31.42% higher after private-equity firm Caxton-Iseman Capital agreed to buy the Company for $6.40 per share, or about $56 million in cash. On the downside, Neurochem Inc. (Nasdaq: NRMX) closed 28.46% lower after preliminary results from the Phase II/III clinical study for Fibrillex did not meet its primary endpoint.
Tomorrow traders will be watching for data from the PPI, Core PPI, Housing Starts, and Building Permits. All are due to hit the wires at 8:30 A.M.

VIP Vimpel Comms: Telenor announces Russian Supreme Court decision (34.42 -0.38)
In response to a request filed by Telenor (TELN) East Invest AS, the Russian Supreme Court today delivered to Telenor an order that will help restore corporate governance in VimpelCom (VIP), the Russian mobile operator in which Telenor owns 26.6% of the voting shares. The order provided to Telenor states that Russia's highest court has stayed enforcement of a lower court decision that, if upheld, would have suspended the super-majority voting provisions in VimpelCom's charter applicable to decisions of VimpelCom's board of directors on strategic issues, including acquisitions. The order also says that Supreme Court will now take jurisdiction of the case.
