(1) Demand for oil is rising.
(2) The energy return on energy invested for oil is falling.
(3) They're not making it any more.

CONCLUSION: The price of petroleum must increase over time to curtail its consumption. This will introduce incentives to develop alternate transport fuels ("green" or not). Altruism has nothing to do with it.
