BMOD's Cypath: Part 2, Basics as to how Biomoda will collect the sample cancer cells from the patients.
In the lung cancer indication, patients are simply required to give a sputum sample, a sputum sample can be taken a variety of different ways, but for this clinical trial Biomoda has chosen to use an FDA approved sputum induction system called the “Lung Flute.” The lung Flute, made by Medical Acoustics, is actually a pretty cool device. Basically patients exhale through a mouthpiece over a reed, this then results in a low frequency wave that travels into the lower airways in the lung which increases mucus clearance. The patient is asked to do this 20 times to get a good sputum sample.
Through this collection process Biomoda had been able to build up what is called a bio-bank of surplus sputum. This bio-bank is indispensable, because it contains demographical data, cytology data, and radiology data that can be leveraged into sales and or a cost-savings agreement for their upcoming Phase III trial.
