Yes there is a way of knowing for sure and I've posted about it already but here it is again. The filing says Midsummer sold 1 million from it's core holdings. You can check this as well by going back to the previous 13 g they filed and noting the difference.
Their filings do not cover or mention the 20 million plus shares that Midsummer received this year to cover the interest payments it is owed on their preferred shares because the company is not required to issue a filing for the interest shares. However Midsummer would not be exempt from including these shares in their aggregate position on the 13 g.
The logical deduction is that since their aggregate position is 7 million not 27 million, they have sold/shorted at least 20 million shares this year.

Now, the interest shares are issued at the beginning of the quarter. Coincidentally there were a few high volume days at the beginning of the January which is the beginning of the new quarter. I believe most of those shares were moved since January as the volume going back to last year just doesn't show many days where massive volumes of shares were moved.
