US firm creates unique Om pendant

A limited edition diamond Om pendant has been produced by the first collaboration between luxury watch and jewellery maker Chopard and luxury goods retailers Mandala Ltd.

The pendants, featuring a diamond studded Om symbol suspended between two pieces of sapphire crystal, will debut in New York City at the ongoing Masters of Indian Cinema Film Festival.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of the pendants will be donated to charities in India working to provide water to villages helping people cope with the aftermath of natural disasters like the Dec 26 tsunami.

Drawing on the significance of the number nine in South Asian culture, only 999 of the two versions of the pendants will be produced, the company announced.

The Chopard Boutique will showcase the pendant by appointment only, allowing customers to reserve the limited edition number of their choice, subject to availability.

"The pendant is available in two versions. One boasts a diamond bezel surrounding the Om symbol, while the other displays a polished bezel. Both versions will be available in 18-karat white and yellow gold," the company said.

"A portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated to various charities in India with the primary focus on funding the provision of water to villages. Support will also be given to relief efforts following natural disasters, such as the flooding caused by annual monsoon rains and the devastating tsunami last December."

"Inspired by the spiritualism in South Asia, Chopard and Mandala Ltd. crafted the limited series around the symbol of Om, the centre of Hindu and Buddhist religions," the company said.

"Om is the universal symbol of peace, life, knowledge, power and strength, representing a sound which encompasses the past, present and future."
