In the past we had that expanding industrial base to absorb the population of immigrants. Now we have zero to negative growth in the manufacturing sector. Here's the key question. Is it easier today for the AVERAGE person to get a good job and live a decent lifestyle than in previous generations? I think it's becoming more difficult and I think the reason is the loss of industry to foreign competition and the enormous surge in immigration. We were insulated from much of this competive world for many generations. Developments in transportation and technology have exposed us all to this new condition. I doubt we could do much to turn the tide at this point.
