Those can be pretty useful, mostly as a screening device for in the field. Of course they don't have as good a detection limit or the level of quality control as certified lab results. But they're nice (see rest of my comments at bottom). Here's an example:

I believe they can be calibrated with rare earth element standards, as well, but I'm not certain.

I know a certain CEO of an exploration company that was looking at purchsing one of these back in July and he said they were quoting him $30-$40K.
I tried to get a quote from one of my vendors for the guy, but the manufacturer (I believe a German company) never got back with my sales rep. Either that, or the sales rep forgot to call me back. I take that back, I did get one quote, but it was just for $431, but I thought that extremely odd, and asked for clarification from the manufacturer. Unfortunately, I never heard back and got busy and forgot to follow up. I don't know if the guy I was getting the quote for ever got one or not. It would be pretty cool if he did.
In any event, they're a good screening tool. This is assuming you have high enough concentrations to be above the detection limit.
