Mobilelover,
Apologies for the delay in responding. In the event this question has not been responded to by another iHubber, let me simply say that barcodes represent merely one facet of Neom's technology. NFC plays a role as well.
Unfortunately, I do not have the time to expound much, but think of NFC as the enabler of the next phase of the ecosystem. Initially 2D barcodes will explode and be found everywhere. It is expected that over this next year new NFC-ready handsets will begin to hit the market. These devices will allow for more automated transactions such as purchasing soda from a vending machine by tapping or waving your handset near an antennae on the vending station. This will result in electronic transactions rather than the physical use of money. NFC also becomes an enabler for RFID applications in grocery stores.
Barcodes will continue to play a strong role within the ecosystem, and all will have their place and relevance.
All of the above...JMO.
Best,
