Last week Verizon unveiled several new Android phones from HTC, Samsung Electronics, Motorola Mobility and LG Electronics that will soon be available to work on its new LTE network, which it calls 4G.

In contrast, Apple’s initial Verizon iPhone—finally unveiled Tuesday—won’t work on LTE. That means Apple could be at a disadvantage against those Android devices, reinforcing share gains those handset makers have already made. HTC’s share of the North American smartphone market nearly doubled to 14.5% in the third quarter from a year earlier. Motorola built a 12.4% share of the same market, up from 1.2% a year earlier, according to Strategy Analytics.

In contrast, Apple’s share dropped slightly to 27.2% over the same period while BlackBerry maker Research In Motion saw its shares collapse by 20 percentage points to 27.7%.
