It appears that what he did is practiced all over the pink sheets. Many companies give restricted/preferred shares in lieu of paying outright for services rendered. Most of the vendors readily accept this form of payment in hopes of the comapny doing well, thus increasing their share price, in effect making double or better on the shares they were given.
