Fortunately airport security is just a small percentage of the need/demand for explosives detection. There were unfortunate bombings over the holiday season in Nigeria and the Phillipines. And then there were the incidents at the embassies in Rome - another one this morning at the Greek embassy. Cargo screening cannot be entirely done by xray machines. And you cannot put everyone entering important buildings or stadiums through an xray scanner. But you CAN sniff around for explosive material.
