My reaction is quite simple, we have opened a "pandora box". For instance, by carrying on the "targeted killing" of those 6 or 7 "operatives" in Yemen last week, we have put a stamp of approval on "targeted killing" everywhere. We no longer have the moral ground to tell Sharon to put an end to "targeted killing" of suicide bombers and their leaders and commanders. It is just a question of time before such tactics spreads to other conflicts, and who knows when such tactics will spread to domestic "reigning in" of extreme elements. Maybe Sharon is justified in his policy, maybe not. One can argue that the immediacy of threat posed by the "targets" of Sharon's "targeted killing" makes such action "justifiable self defense". But our carrying this action in Yemen? What threat immediacy justifies that action? Are we going to carry on such "targeted killing" if we find an El Quaeda cell in Canada? How about on our own soil? This action opened the gate to a very slippery path, and the unintended consequences are horrifying. We have given up on "the rule of law", the foundation of order in our society.
The worse of it all, we get used to it, we lose our outrage and it hardens our heart to the suffering of others. A very slippery slope indeed, and I hear no voices of opposition, no civil rights advocate pointing out that such an action logically leads to the abrogation of civil rights not just there, but everywhere. What ever happened to Jefferson's words " ...inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." I think we are all guilty of acquiescence on that subject, and the media (was that the "Liberal Media" once?), a thundering silence on the subject.
