I never learned the details about VME. Other than it was Motorola's chosen format, what was its claim to fame?

It is widely used in industrial, military, and aerospace
applications. It is very rugged form factor. Basic asynch
operations limit BW to < 40 MB/s. Block and multiplexed
block transfers approach 80 and 160 MB/s respectively.

The predominant processors for VME systems used to be
680x0 but now is PowerPC. Many other processors and
DSPs were on VME at one time or another including x86,
MIPS, Alpha, and SPARC.
