I guess it's a double intendre. One could 'never give up' looking for that truly rare and valuable hidden gem, or one could 'never give up' on the lame dog they're stuck in. One is not so easy, while the other only requires stubbornness. It helps when you can look at a matter without emotion. Never love anything that can't love you back, and money cannot love back.
