Rambus Patent Lawsuit Against Infineon Is Dismissed (Update1)
March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Rambus Inc. fell as much as 14 percent after a U.S. judge dismissed Rambus's patent- infringement lawsuit against German chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG.

U.S. District Judge Robert Payne in Richmond, Virginia, said that the dismissal of the lawsuit was the ``only appropriate action'' to punish Rambus for destruction of documents relating to its patent litigation strategy. He said Infineon had successfully argued that Rambus destroyed the documents to prevent chipmakers from challenging Rambus patents.

Shares of Los Altos, California-based Rambus fell as low as $14.70 in extended trading after the ruling. The shares closed at $17.16 in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading.

Rambus spokeswoman Linda Ashmore declined to immediately comment on Payne's ruling.

The Infineon case is Rambus Inc. v. Infineon Technologies AG, 00cv524, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
