If they have 64 bit applications that they wish to use, just pop in the newer plug compatible 64 Xeons.

...or if they had gone with a socket 940 system they could just pop in the newer plug compatible dual core Opteron.

Of course, it generally doesn't work that way. The configuration on virutally all of our servers stays the same until they're EOLed.
