Re: How fast is IPF growing outside HP, and what is its non-HP platform sales vs. workstation and server RISC platform sales?
If you look at SGI, NEC, Unisys, FSC, Hitachi, and Bull, you'll find that IPF has already become an integral part of all their server lines. The only other high end vendors of consequence are IBM and Sun. We all know IBM's path as of recently, and Sun seems to avoid IPF out of religion, rather than any good policy (UltraSparc isn't competitive today, let alone after Montecito launches). Who else is there? Not even Dell plays in this market.
Having said all that, I see IPF filling up its area of the market - roughly 30%, right? - as soon as HP transitions customers over completely, which will happen over the next year or two. After that, it's all whether HP and tier-2 vendors can gain in the high end space over IBM and Sun. The latter will be easier, their days are numbered. IBM will be harder to break, but never say never. I think IPF has some distinct advantages going forward.
