"One side holds that advertising should be included
not only as a (small) revenue stream for iHub,
but to encourage people to purchase subscriptions,
which makes the ads go away and speeds up..."

Bob,

My opinion is the same as i mentioned in the past,
YES YES YES have LOTS of advertising on iHub,
but have it on a seperate page that all people who
are paying and FREE and just lurkers need to go-there
by their own decision, as in

Home MailBox Boards Favorites Hot! Tools Other Help Store

with the above top menu Store a place to look at things 4Sale
that will be as you want, good stuff, maybe even deals that
not only get iHub an eye-ball revenue, but if one buys something
from this iHub site that iHub gets a sales commission.

Also, you keep on saying ads "push" non paying members
to switch up to a better environment. Well, to me these folks
will or will not be paying members based on ads is untrue
since i bet very few are beating down enough to pay up
and i bet most just simply cut back and eventually leave.
But even if i'am completely off target here its a mute point
since to me the success of iHub is to get HUGE numbers
of new lookers here, and if the word was out that they would
never see an ad, then i bet many who are at boards with ads
will lean over a short time to here since its more relaxing,
and like that snow ball rolling down a clean wet snow hill,
it will feed onto itself as more arrive, more post, more arrive
becasue "more are here" and eventually they need NEXT 10.
