I am appalled!

I am hearing a show on my local news station, where they are interviewing the Republican candidate for the Congressperson in my district.

The interviewer asked an EXCELLENT question. She asked about the desire of Republicans to extend the Bush tax cuts, pointing out that Democrats support extending tax cuts for the middle class, but not the tax cuts for the wealthy. She also pointed out that extending tax cuts for the wealthy would come with a $700 billion price tag, and showed a quote from a New York Times columnist that the tax cuts for the wealthiest tax bracket would probably not benefit any small business owners at all, would go towards the top 1% or even 0.1% of income earners, which are beyond the definition of "small business".

I was eager to see the Republican respond, wondering if he would evade the question, or even fumble. He had thus far come across as very charismatic and knowledgable to the questions, so I wondered if this would be his downfall.

However, it came as a surprise to me not how he evaded the question, but how brutally honest he was. It's just the way he said it was "smart" enough that I wonder if people noticed what he actually said.

I'll summarize it, though. He basically said that he thought it was a good idea to extend the tax cuts to all, and that if we want to address the deficit, we should do it with budget cuts.

Translation: we should be cutting programs that help people, and giving that money to the wealthiest 1% or 0.1% of the country!

I am completely appalled by the response, not just because a Republican said it (because we know they believe it), but because he was brave enough to say it on camera, and smart enough to say it in a way that probably went over most people's heads.

Seriously, he came across very well, and I can see people voting for this guy, even though he said directly that he will try to cut programs and give the money to the wealthy.

It is beyond amazement that the Democrats can't take quotes like this and come up with a good way of stating the obvious: that Republicans pretend that they want to help everyone, but there's only one group of people they want to help - the top 1% or 0.1%. AND they want to help this wealthiest percentile by cutting benefits for everyone else.

I just can't believe that Democrats just can't seem to do anything right. This should be an easy election to win, and instead the party is in disarray.

Disgraceful!
