Bush's incompetence, lack of oversight, overzealous plans along with the decision to commit to a strategic blunder undoubtedly cost us ENORMOUS amounts of national prestige, money and most importantly lives.
No, it doesn't make us better than our autocratic "friend" 93 miles south of Florida. But despite several bruises, gashes and lacerations, our nation STILL possesses something Cuba doesn't have.
We have the ability to bring those who committed horrendous crimes (it's only a matter of time before Bush gets a summons) to court, and exact justice on them. And despite NUMEROUS problems facing our court system, it's STILL light years ahead of Cuba's "shadow" court system (which is really an elaborate show for those unlucky folks who questioned Castro's power).
And despite popular consensus, we still have a system that can see politicians get elected/voted "out" at least every two years. Cuba only stages "elections". Want to run against Castro? Count yourself lucky if you wake up the following morning....
There is no question the crimes that were committed out of fear, nationalistic furvor, greed and stupidity over the past 10 years will leave a lasting bruise on our nation. But bruises heal.
Cuba's bruises (and what little limbs are left behind since the Spanish occupied the island) will never heal, unless people are allowed to vote freely again....and the freedom of choice is allowed to return to a land that has been denied choice for nearly 4 decades.
